Who and what are we? The province mandated with the amalgamation of the health boards that they institute health councils to liaise between the boards and the public. Some areas already had health councils in place but the Central Peace area did not. We began our work approximately 4 years ago and the take off point was from the municipal councils. For that reason we are set up as one elected and one at large member from each municipality in the Central Peace. Our first undertaking was the recruitment of doctors as there was probability at that time we would be down to only two doctors or less. This consumed our first year and we were successful in our recruitment efforts. Since then we have moved on to our main purpose which is to bring forward community health concerns to Peace Country Health(PCH) and relay back to the community the directions the health region is moving to as well as issues and improvements to health care. We are not here to operate the hospital or relay personal issues people have had with health care in our region. We are to be aware of the procedure they need to take to address those issues for themselves and pass that information on to them. Our work plan developed last year included three issues in particular we wanted to pursue which were a Volunteen program in our area, awareness of mental health issues, and acute care/long term care bed shortages.

Some of the issues we have been involved in with lobbying efforts and raising awareness in are patient discharge improvements, Men at Risk program, rural health care funding formula inequities, getting a new regional hospital in Grande Prairie, and a lack or rural mental health care. Some of our accomplishments are better blood donor clinic advertising, participation in the Community Health Assessment, and medical staff recruitment and retention. Our group has had excellent attendance of the PCH Community Health Councils Forum and Strategic Planning sessions.

We welcome our new members to health council and if you have any questions please ask any of us and we will be happy to help.
